Welcome

Paleoenvironmental Research & Aquatic Biogeochemistry (PRAB) Lab

We study how freshwater ecosystems, such as lakes and wetlands, respond to environmental change driven by both natural processes and human activities.

Our research focuses on northern landscapes, from temperate to boreal and Arctic regions, where aquatic systems play a crucial role in supporting biodiversity, regulating climate, and sustaining human well-being. Using environmental archives, such as lake sediments and peat cores, we reconstruct ecological and biogeochemical changes over timescales ranging from decades to millennia. These long-term perspectives improve our understanding of present-day processes and inform projections of future change.

Our interdisciplinary work combines limnology, sedimentology, biogeochemistry, and ecology through fieldwork, laboratory analysis, and data modeling. By integrating these approaches, we aim to advance knowledge of ecosystem dynamics and support the sustainable stewardship of freshwater environments in a rapidly changing world.
